EEC Internal gas valve error - valve energized when it should not be

Critical severity Goodman/Amana GM9S96/AM9S96Goodman/Amana GM9S80/AM9S80Goodman/Amana GM9C96/AM9C96

What the control is telling you

The control sees voltage at the gas valve with no call for heat. Flowcharts call this code EC. Note: the wiring diagram legend labels this code 'External Gas Valve Error' while the troubleshooting chart and flowchart say internal - follow the chart.

Applies to: Goodman/Amana/GMC gas furnaces, 9-speed ECM, 7-segment control. Two-stage 96%: AC9C96, AM9C96, GC9C96, GM9C96. Single stage 80%: VC9S80, VM9S80, AC9S80, AM9S80, GC9S80, GM9S80. Single stage 92/96%: VC9S96, VM9S96, AC9S96, AM9S96, AM9S92, GC9S96, GM9S96, GM9S92

Likely causes

  • Gas valve relay on the control board stuck closed
  • Miswiring that feeds the gas valve circuit
  • Gas valve shorted to ground or loose connection

Test and repair steps

  1. Warning: a valve powered with no call for heat is a safety hazard - shut off the manual gas valve until repaired.
  2. Check the gas valve wiring for miswiring and correct it.
  3. With no call for heat, check for voltage at the gas valve. Voltage present = board relay stuck closed; replace the integrated control board.
  4. Remove the valve wires and check them for voltage; if present, check the valve for a short to ground or loose connection and repair or replace the valve.
