E6.3 Igniter open or igniter relay fault

High severity Trane S8V2Trane S8B1Trane S8X1Trane S8X2

What the control is telling you

Either the igniter circuit is open/shorted or the IFC igniter relay has failed (stuck or not switching).

Applies to: Trane S8V2 (80%, 2-stage, variable speed, Link) and S8B1 / S8X1 / S8X2 (80%, 1- and 2-stage)

Likely causes

  • Broken igniter
  • Damaged igniter harness or loose plug
  • Failed igniter relay on IFC

Test and repair steps

  1. Warning: Turn off power before unplugging connectors or measuring resistance.
  2. Call for 1st stage heat and watch for igniter glow.
  3. No glow measure 120 VAC between IGN-H and IGN-N on the IFC during warm-up; no voltage means replace the IFC.
  4. Voltage present but no glow check the harness and connectors, then unplug the igniter and read resistance - about 37 to 70 ohms at around 75 F is good; outside that, replace the igniter.
  5. If the igniter stays on when it should not, the relay is stuck - replace the IFC.
