P5 Compressor phase overcurrent

High severity Gree SapphireGree Livo GEN4Gree Vireo GEN3Gree Multi21+Gree GMV6 Mini VRF

What the control is telling you

Current in a compressor phase went over the limit (GMV6: inverter compressor overcurrent).

Applies to: Gree Sapphire 9-24k (SAP..HP230V1A), Livo GEN4 30-36k (4LIV..HP230V1A), Vireo GEN3 9-24k (3VIR..HP115/230V1A), Multi21+ 18-24k multi-zone (MULTI..HP230V1CO), GMV6 Ultra Heat Mini VRF 36-60k (GMV-V..WL/C-T(U))

Likely causes

  • Supply voltage out of range
  • Compressor U/V/W wires loose or in wrong order
  • Compressor winding fault or grounded winding
  • Overcharge, high load, dirty coils
  • Inverter board fault

Test and repair steps

  1. Warning: Kill power and let the outdoor board capacitors bleed down (about 20 min, or meter the DC bus below 20 V) before touching the inverter board.
  2. Check supply voltage is within 210-250 VAC at L-N.
  3. Check the compressor U/V/W wires are tight and in the order shown on the wiring diagram.
  4. Measure resistance between the three compressor terminals (should be about equal) and from each terminal to the copper (should be over 500 ohm).
  5. Clean coils, check fans and correct any overcharge.
  6. Replace the compressor if the windings fail; otherwise replace the outdoor board.
