E11 Flame rollout switch open
What the control is telling you
A manual-reset flame rollout switch on the burner/manifold area has opened - flame came out of the burner box. The circulator blower runs continuously and the furnace will not fire.
Applies to: Goodman/Amana/GMC gas furnaces, 9-speed ECM, 7-segment control. Two-stage 96%: AC9C96, AM9C96, GC9C96, GM9C96. Single stage 80%: VC9S80, VM9S80, AC9S80, AM9S80, GC9S80, GM9S80. Single stage 92/96%: VC9S96, VM9S96, AC9S96, AM9S96, AM9S92, GC9S96, GM9S96, GM9S92
Likely causes
- Wrong gas pressure / overfiring or wrong orifices
- Burners misaligned or restricted; orifice plate out of position
- Flame impingement, burners with oversized cross-over slots
- Air leaking around or through the heat exchanger (possible cracked heat exchanger)
- Blocked flue
Test and repair steps
- Warning: a rollout trip means flame left the burner box - find the cause before putting the furnace back in service.
- Remove the burner door, press the reset on the rollout switch and check it for continuity with an ohmmeter; replace it if it will not stay closed.
- Check inlet and manifold gas pressure against the rating plate and the orifice size.
- Check burner alignment, the orifice/heat exchanger plate position and look for burner or flue restriction.
- Inspect the heat exchanger for leaks; check for air leaking into the burner compartment.
- Run a full heat cycle and watch the flame pattern before leaving.
